Shepparton Classic Preview: Aston Looks the Goods

Saturday Night feature greyhound racing heads to Shepparton for the running of the $14,500 DPR Insurance Brokers Shepparton Classic (450m) at 9:11pm, and with a first prize of $10,000 it has attracted a particularly strong field.

Favourite for the race will be the Jason Thompson trained Aston Bolero. A brilliant winner of his heat Monday Night in the fastest time of the night, he will certainly be hard to beat. Whilst the draw (Box 5) hasn’t been kind to him it must be noted he has a slow beginner drawn on his inside. With any luck he should be able to get clear running early which means he should lead and, if he does that, it’ll just about be all over.

His main danger for mine is certainly Absolute Silence. He chased home Aston Bolero in the heat and he got himself into a good place to strike off the back, but he was no match at all in the straight. If Aston Bolero is a little slow away or finds trouble then this guy can capitalise. He will get clear running from Box 8, and he has a great record at this track and trip and will run a terrific race.

Other chances go to Alpha Hermes (2) but his chances rely heavily on his start. If he misses it he probably can’t win. Proper Bluey (3), who was an upset winner of his heat on Monday Night beating Take the Crown (Replay), is drawn well but he would need to lead here to be a factor. Blue Rocket (4) has drawn poorly but does have a strong finish.

On a good night of racing I gave other chances to Little Ach Cee in Race 4, Roman Baroque in Race 7 and Attract, who is coming off a strong win Monday, in Race 11. Good Luck and Good Punting.

My Selections: 5-8-4-3

Watch: Aston Bolero (2) winning his heat in devastating fashion.
